African American babies in Milwaukee die before their first birthday at a rate of 100 per year. The Strong Baby Sanctuary is both an organization and
movement in Milwaukee to protect infants and guide mothers in physical care and nurturing to ensure a healthy start in life.

The program is run cooperatively through Columbia St Mary’s Urban Church Wellness initiative, the City of Milwaukee Health Department and the United Way of Greater Milwaukee. Hephatha Lutheran Church is one of the locations for expectant and new mothers for education, resources and much-needed basic baby items.

In addition to parental training, the Baby Sanctuary program provides supplies and clothing for newborns through two years old. Donations of all kinds are needed to strengthen this ministry. In 2016 in Milwaukee, 7500 at-risk people were helped through this program.
